On the way back from the boat-building site Ashraf picked up a couple of fresh coconuts for us. A real treat for sure–but I found out that his vehicle was not equipped with coffee cup holders big enough to handle a coconut.
In this photo the carpenters are installing vertical wood paneling in front of the lapped hull boards. Lots of headroom in this vessel & note the size of the ceiling beams!
One of the senior carpenters told me that it would take about 12 months to build this boat.
My friend Jafar tells me that this region is famous for building traditional wooden dhows. He arranged for us to visit a site where 3 boats were under construction. This place was amazing! I could spend my whole vacation here.
