Spiders Love Sailboats :(

46°1′31″ N 83°44′59″ W

Here we are on the dock in Drummond, MI.

I dislike spiders as much as I dislike going up to the top of the mast in the bosun’s chair!

As soon as the sun starts to get low in the sky the spiders come out of their hiding places & start to weave now webs around the windows & in the rigging. The next morning we sweep down the webs & the cycle begins again. It’s like the wolf & the sheep dog in Bugs Bunny cartoons.

Actually, I can put up with sweeping the webs down each morning but it’s the spider poop on the white fiberglass that ticks me off. That’s hard to wash! (Plug for Spray Nine here). How these critters can poop sideways & upside down baffles me.

This guy in the photo below was working like crazy outside our port window setting up his “fishing net” for the night. If nothing else I have to admire their work ethic. I will sleep while he tends to his business.

Cheers mates!

Drummond Island USA!

Here we are in the USA, Drummond Island, Michigan. It was a 3 1/2 hour trip from Meldrum Bay, ON.

We were officially checked in & welcomed by a very nice US Customs person & the marina staff. Having the NEXUS card sure makes the process a lot quicker & smoother.

We will spend the night here at the marina & then head for St. Ignace, MI tomorrow.

Cheers mates!

Layover In Meldrum Bay

We spent yesterday on the dock in Meldrum Bay. It was a good day to rest a bit & to also catch up on some chores.

The starboard winch was turning very stiffly so Chris took that apart, cleaned & lubricated it. Works like new again. Repeat on the port side winch.

We also set up the mizzen & main sails & I washed the boat. Now we are ready to head to the USA.

One of the things I really like about sailing is the people we meet. When we ate at the restaurant the night before we met a couple from London – Jeff & Chris – who were touring Manitoulin Island as part of their journey to visit friends in Winnipeg. Then they will head back to London via Chicago They are doing it in style in a beautiful red Corvette! They joined us for dinner on Ananda last night. Chef Chris Cavanaugh cooked us up a fine meal. A bit of wine was consumed & many stories were told. We agreed to connect up again in London this fall & share more stories of our adventures.

This morning we will set out for Drummond, Michigan as our point of entry into the USA. I called US Border Services in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and they advised me that we could use our NEXUS cards at this location.
